Devon Cole
Prompt: “Janis Joplin: Pearl”
When I read the prompt I thought of a person crying and in each tear there was a little janis joplin crying too. It wasn't sad. Just happy tears.

KIIRA:
My childhood home had a Joan Miró exhibition poster from early 70s, so now when I think of that period it's the first thing that comes to my mind. I wanted to draw a swan, because the album made me also think of a swan song, but if I'm being honest I just wanted to do some Miró-esque lines.

It’s a bummer but all I’ve ever really known about Joplin is based on talk about the 27-club, that one Didion essay, and Chelsea Hotel #2. It’s so weird that the previous day I was preaching about a certain car manufacturer and apparently the last song Joplin ever recorded was an a cappella song called “Mercedes Benz”. It was released posthumously on her last album, Pearl.
I wrote a song about loving someone I don’t know because I feel a lot of love for Janis even though I’ve only gotten a glimpse at her art.
I wanted to make a ridiculous fuzzy song because Janis was all about attitude (I can’t go there vocally) and I’m at the point where I’m sick of everything else I’ve made so far and just want to be Kathleen Hanna for a minute. I’m trying to stay in this feeling for a bit because it’s good to feel a little uncomfortable and embarrassed during this project. This happens every year at the 1/3 point. Apologies to all sensitive ears.
I’ve also included a voice memo of when I was only figuring out the chords. It might be better than this crunchy mess but I had fun and learned a lot #marchensemble -anxiety.
